Let's start first with a necessary clarification: Zermatt fascinates tourists for the particularity of being one completely car-free city.

The circulation of private vehicles is in fact possible only in the part of the city which is located downstream about 5 km away; in reality it is a typical peculiarity of the Canton of Valais which also has other places that have roads closed to traffic.

During the summer months, one of the most important events for Zermatt takes place, namely theanniversary of the climb to the Matterhorn, the natural element that dominates the city and which over the years has become its symbol.

The event is held precisely on July 14 and recalls the feat of the British climber Edward Whymepr who on the same date in 1865 carried out the ascent of the mountain together with a team of 7 men who reached the summit of 4478 meters.

This feat, however, had a tragic conclusion as during the descent, the climber and three men died following the breaking of the rope that secured them by making a flight of 1200 meters. This made the inhabitants of the city particularly sensitive to the event, which is why this anniversary is celebrated every year which has led over the years to prefer Zermatt as a destination for various climbers.

Also to celebrate the feat of the English climber, the new one was inaugurated in 2015 on the Matterhorn at about 3250 meters Hörnli refuge which allows climbers and mountain enthusiasts to make a stop where they can restore their energy and at the same time enjoy a splendid panorama of the Alps.

The refuge also has the particularity of being completely with zero environmental impact as it is powered exclusively by solar energy. To commemorate the climb of 1865, a theatrical performance is also organized that traces the events of Whymepr's enterprise and the tragic descent.
