Viel dal Pan
His name means "Via del Pane" as it was once used as an alternative route for the exchange of goods between Trentino and Veneto.
With the arrival of motor vehicles it was abandoned and then recovered for tourism purposes, today it is in fact one of the most popular hiking trails of all The Dolomites.
The path of the Viel dal Pan develops all at high altitude with one altitude ranging from 2000 to 2400 meters above sea level.
It can be accessed from the Veneto and Trentino sides.
It is one of the most popular excursions because it allows you to admire the panorama of the Marmolada glacier with a magnificent contrast of colors between the high altitude green meadows, the white glacier and the blue of Lake Fedaia at the foot of the Marmolada.
In the early summer months, the meadows are also full of mountain flowers, giving additional colors to this magnificent landscape.

Easy path but requires attention
The difference in height of the path viel dal pan is not excessive, it is a continuous moderate up and down with even flat sections.
However, it is worth considering that it is a high altitude trail, this means peak sun on days of good weather, without any vegetation in which to find shade and shelter or the risk of thunderstorms and heavy rains with fog in case of bad weather.
Like all high altitude trails weather conditions can change drastically very quickly, a clear morning can however see the arrival of strong thunderstorms in the central hours of the day. For this you need to consult the weather in detail and calculate the travel times well.
The other element not to be underestimated is the path, easy and free of noticeable obstacles but in many places narrow and straight overhanging the slope, it is not possible to get out of the path and you have to be careful.
It is not recommended to tackle it with strollers, younger children should be held by the hand and under the watchful eye of their parents.
If you pay attention to these aspects it is anyway one of the routes popular with families, here it is possible to spend a magnificent day among the green meadows and the view of the white Marmolada glacier.

The main reference point of this excursion is the Viel dal Pan refuge which is located at 2400m above sea level.
