Solda in the summer
Soldiers is a fraction of the municipality of Stelvio, located in Val Venosta in the province of Bolzano. The locality it is situated 1906 meters above sea level and lies at the foot of the Ortles-Cevedale mountain range.
The name of Solda has a mysterious origin, but it seems to derive from a Celtic expression which meant "small water" because, according to some naturalistic studies, there was actually a swamp in the area.
Solda is a very popular resort even in summer, because it offers evocative views, the possibility of taking walks for experts and beginners, unspoiled nature to be discovered, shelters where you can rest after climbing, all framed in the mountains of the Tyrol.
Starting from Solda it is possible to reach the mountain huts with different types of routes: some can be reached with an hour and a half walk, also suitable for those who are not experienced walkers, others instead with routes lasting more than three hours, recommended only for who understands the mountains.
In particular the area around theOrtles (3905 m), the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps, constitutes a true Eldorado for mountaineers and climbers, and this for some time. Dream landscapes with extraordinary flora and fauna characterize the Stelvio National Park in the heart of which lies the Ortles Group. Along the famous road of the Stelvio Pass starting from the Prato valley floor with its orchards, you can reach, through Gomagoi / Stelvio and Solda, up to Trafoi and even higher up to the highest passable Alpine pass: the Stelvio Pass with its splendid possibility to practice summer skiing from the end of May to the beginning of November.
The Stelvio National Park is one of the largest and most interesting protected areas in Europe. The National Park has an area of about 130.000 hectares and includes the entire territory of Ortles-Cevedale group, borders to the north with the Swiss National Park of Engadine and south with the Adamello Regional Park. Walk, climb and relax in an uncontaminated patch of land.
From Solda it is also easy and comfortable to face some walks to discover the Val Venosta, simpler and more relaxing routes, to discover new places, in a valley full of suggestive panoramas, culture and curiosities. Among the various areas of interest there is Tre Fontane, a town a few kilometers from Solda, which offers visitors the opportunity to relax, stroll, play with their children at the sanctuary of the three Sacred Fountains. From here it is possible to take a very special short walk towards the three waterfalls that flow from Monte Madaccio.
In Solda it is also possible to visit some monuments that recall and trace the history of this locality: the church of Santa Gertrude, dating back to 1369, the new church, from the neo-Romanesque period, consecrated in 1904 and the grotto of Lourdes, blessed in 1892 , a destination for tourists and faithful.
A curiosity about the town is that it was chosen by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner to build one of the seats of his museum. Messner Mountain Museum, At the end of the world, and imported a dozen Tibetan yaks there.
