House to see in Sappada in summer
Experiencing Sappada in summer means spending your days walking on hiking trails and reaching naturalistic and historical places of extraordinary beauty.
Remaining in the center of Sappada, precisely in the village of Mühlbach, the Alpine Fauna Park offers the opportunity to see typically Alpine animals such as chamois but above all fallow deer up close.
From the Park it is easy to reach the neighbourhood Small Museum of the Great War in the township Bach: open in summer, it is housed in an ancient forge and collects artefacts related to the First World War, weapons, uniforms, field stoves, trench objects, gas masks, helmets and a very rare first aid field kit.
The museum is the starting point to reach the waterfalls and the next Big Waterfall, very scenic in the height of summer when the water flow is maximum: from June to September, the entire path to reach them is illuminated so as to allow everyone to enjoy these waterfalls even in the middle of the night.
To learn about the history of Sappada and Ladin culture, we recommend a visit to Giuseppe Fontana Ethnographic Museum: it is within this museum space that we learn curiosities about the local flora and fauna but above all we know the origins of the town, when between the 10th and 11th centuries a group of settlers coming from Cainthia and Tyrol, with the permission of the Patriarch of Aquileia, they founded those villages that today give life to Sappada, a German-speaking linguistic enclave.
Another interesting museum space is located in the Cretta hamlet and it is the Museum of Peasant Civilization: it is the nineteenth-century wooden house furnished with original furniture and the caretaker, through anecdotes and curiosities, accompanies visitors by the hand in learning about the daily life of the ancient Ladins.
There are also many places full of mysticism in Sappada and one of these is the late Baroque Church of Santa Margherita , Chapel of Calvary with three wooden crucifixes: to reach the latter you start from Mühlbach and, skirting the stream of the same name, continue up a slope dotted with 14 small chapels to symbolically retrace the Via Crucis.
Between Santo Stefano di Cadore and Sappada there is a wooden bridge overlooking the wonderful Acquatona ravine, a gorge from which the waters of the Rio Acquatona flow from a height of 50 metres: if you want, you can go down the 190 steps until you reach the heart of the ravine.
Summer is the perfect season to reach the sources of the Piave, the "sacred river of the Fatherland" scene of many battles during the First World War: starting from Cima Sappada, you cross Val Sesis up to the slopes of Monte Peralba.
The source of the Piave is located at 1830 meters above sea level and is flanked by the Rifugio Sorgenti del Piave where you can refresh yourself with the typical local cuisine and a drop of gentianella grappa. If you want, you can continue along a forest road until you reach the Calvi refuge, right in front of the Sartor via ferrata: then passing the Sesis pass and following the common Pope John Paul II road, you reach a height of 2694 meters where there is snow even in the height of summer.
Holidays in Sappada
Summer in Sappada can be a lot of fun, probably much more so than the winter season when most of the hiking trails are closed due to snow: summer days are never very hot as they are affected by the alpine climate, but they are very often sunny due to the exposure of the valley.
To get to know Sappada and its rich landscape in depth, a weekend is certainly not enough: a longer holiday will pass in a flash in Sappada and even when you choose to stay in the city you will certainly not be bored given the many summer events organised.
Among the most engaging traditional festivals are the Hay Festival, Folk Festival complete with group parades Holzhockar, Plodar Fest dedicated to traditional mountain music and finally the beautiful Sappamukki of mid-September or the festive return of the cows from the summer mountain pastures.
To enjoy Sappada comfortably, there is no shortage of accommodation facilities: there are different types, from B&Bs to classic hotels (some even with spas) up to holiday apartments furnished in Alpine style. For an even more immersive experience in the area, a good alternative is to stay in the refuges, whose value is above all represented by the spectacular views of the Alps.
