Val Pusteria has an area of 2.071 km² which corresponds to 28% of the Province of Bolzano. The inhabitants are approx. 73.000. Only 25% of the surface is located at an altitude between 500 and 1.000 m. More than half are located between 1.000 and 2.000 m, the rest are even higher. This means: many slopes, a lot of wood (green valley + good air), mountain areas and glaciers.

Agriculture, crafts, trade and tourism are the main occupations of the inhabitants. Much has been preserved fromancient peasant tradition. The Pusteria peasant farm is either a paired farm, where the house and barn are separate but close together, or a single farm where, as the name already implies, the two functions are under the same roof. Large and typical Pusteria farms with bread ovens and granaries emerge from the woods and frame the valley.
