Sella Pass

The Sella Pass is located at 2200 meters above sea level and divides Val di Fassa and Val Gardena.

It is one of the main tourist destinations in Trentino and Alto Adige because from here you can admire wonderful views of the main peaks of the Dolomites and numerous wonderful excursions start from here.

From the Sella Pass you can admire the peaks of the Sassolungo, the Marmolada, the Sella Group in all their beauty and, further away, the peaks of the Odle.

How to reach it

The Sella pass can be reached by car going up from Canazei or from Selva di Val Gardena, or it can be reached from the roads that connect it with Passo Gardena and Passo Pordoi.

During the summer (from June to September) it is very busy and the traffic is intense. Furthermore, being an Alpine pass it does not offer much space for parking, the few available are subject to charges.

The best solution is to reach it early in the morning (arrive before 8 in the morning) or go up by public transport. There are bus lines that reach this place all day long.

An alternative, but widely used, way is to reach Passo Sella using the ski lifts that go up from Val di Fassa and Val Gardena.

The Sella Pass offers a magnificent view of the main Dolomite peaks. Just park the car and move a little in the 4 directions to admire different and magnificent landscapes.

For those who want to admire the Sella pass from above, they can do so by going up with the ski lift that leads up to the Sassolungo fork at 2685m above sea level.

Here is the Demetz refuge where you can stop for a snack with a view of the Sella group and the valleys of the Dolomites, as well as a view of the Siusi plateau.

Tour of the Sassolungo

Tour of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto

A demanding excursion in terms of length and duration even if the path is well beaten and the path is marked by good signs. It is recommended for people with a good workout as the complete tour requires a full day of walking. It is good to take into account that there are exposed traits and therefore it must be carefully evaluated.

From Passo Sella proceed towards the city of the Sassi and the Comici Refuge, from here proceed in the direction of the Vicenza Refuge but before reaching it continue along the path that leads to the Sassopiatto Refuge. Reached the Pertini refuge and then continue towards the Friederich August refuge, from here it ends with the return to the Sella pass.

As we have already said, it is good to leave early in the morning (no later than 7:30 am) and return in the afternoon.

The tour offers extraordinary views over Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi, Val di Fassa and the peaks of the Sella Group, the Odle and the Catinaccio.

Furthermore, you always walk on the slopes of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, the fantastic stone giants.
