Lavarone lake
Il Lavarone lake is a small alpine lake located in the locality of the same name, in the heart of the Folgaria and Lavarone plateau (Alpe Cimbra) in Trentino Alto Adige. It is a bathing lake located at 1079m above sea level.
Lake Lavarone is located on the road that connects Rovereto (in Trentino) to Asiago (in Veneto), near the locality of the same name. It can be reached directly by car but those who wish can reach it starting from Chiesa, along the Prombis path. The lake is over 2000 years old, it was formed due to a sinking of the ground in 210 BC. From then on, the lake is constantly fed by surface springs, while the outflow of water occurs due to underground infiltrations.
Lake Lavarone has been one of the most popular tourist spots in the area since the times of Sigmund Freud, who during his holidays in Lavarone at the Hotel Du Lac loved to walk around the water.
Still today thanks to bathing facilities that have arisen in recent years, the lake is tourist destination for couples and families who want to spend a nice relaxing day in the mountains. They are accompanied by a thriving sport fishing activity, while those who wish can walk the relaxing path that surrounds the lake, to admire a splendid panorama and enchanting colored waters.
It is possible to stay directly on the lake in one of the numerous hotels of all categories, some of which also provide access to equipped beaches, as well as at the campground, reserved for those who love to enjoy a holiday in contact with nature.
In winter, Lake Lavarone does not hibernate: when it freezes it becomes a natural skating rink, and it is also the place where, since 1985, rescue courses under the ice organized by ANIS (National Association of Underwater Instructors) have been held. .
Like many Alpine and Dolomite lakes, the lake is at the center of a legend. The one in Lavarone tells of a wood owned by two brothers, who were fighting to get it in its entirety. God wanted to intervene to punish them, and made the forest sink by filling it with water, thus transforming it into a lake. The two brothers therefore no longer had any reason to quarrel. According to the legend, fossil remains of a fir forest can be found on Lake Lavarone.
