Barrea Lake

The Barrea Lake is an artificial lakeand created with the damming of the Sangro river; it is located in the province of L'Aquila within the Abruzzo National Park, between Lazio and Molise, in the mountain community of Alto Sangro and the Cinque Miglia plateau.

It is located at one altitude of 980 masl, with a length of about 5 km, a width of 500 meters and a maximum depth of 31 m.
Monte Greco with its 2249 m is the highest peak.

The lake is surrounded by woods which give it the characteristic green color, with very cold, very clean waters, where you can swimThe climate is typical of the mountains, cold in winter and cool in summer.


Among the specimens of avifauna you can meet egrets, mallards, knights of Italy, moorhens, kingfishers.
The Apennine territory offers shelter to wolves, Marsican brown bears, deer, Abruzzo chamois; among the great birds of prey there is the golden eagle, but also other birds such as herons and grebes.
Among the flora we find the black pine, the iris that grows only in some places between May and June, and the most beautiful and rare orchid "the slipper of Venus".

Fishing is allowed with a daily permit available at the Museo del Lupo in Alfedena; Advance booking is recommended, approximately two weeks before the stay.

Civitella Alfedena is the smallest village in the valley with its 300 inhabitants (approximately) at an altitude of 1121 m asl fascinates the tourist for its narrow alleys, its stone houses and its typical handicraft shops with hand weaving and of painting on ceramics.
