Antrona Lake

Lake Antrona is a small lake located in the northern Alps of Lombardy. It sits at 1073 meters above sea level in a valley called Valle d'Antrona.

To get there, take the provincial road that leads to the town of Antronapiana . The valley is full of natural pools and numerous hiking trails.

Its shores are the ideal place both for picnics with relatives and friends and for relaxing under the sun: it is a small pearl of paradise in the middle of the mountains, where the sun peeps out from the peaks.

Lake Antrona is a natural lake, but it was created by a massive landslide on July 27, 1642. Approximately 12 million cubic meters of rock broke away from the summit of Pozzuoli, covering the valley floor for more than 2 kilometers, reaching as far as the outskirts of Antronapiana . Unfortunately, this accident damaged about forty homes and the same number of residents.

The lake is still fully accessible, and can be toured in both directions. Along these paths, you'll also find numerous wooden tables perfect for picnics. There's also a restaurant/café for those who don't have a packed lunch. Along the circular path surrounding Lake Antrona , you'll find a particularly evocative and unusual spot: the suspended walkway that allows you to walk across the Sajont waterfall.

Appropriate clothing and hiking shoes, if possible, are recommended , as slipping is very easy. To reach the waterfall, you must climb 193 steps (approximately 90 meters in elevation). Strollers can reach the lake from the village of Antronapiana via the paved road, but the panoramic tour of the lake is not possible, as the trails are not suitable for strollers or bicycles. A complete tour of Lake Antrona takes about an hour. There are no sections requiring particular physical preparation; the route is considered to be of medium difficulty.

On weekends, the lake is besieged by hundreds and hundreds of tourists, so it may be more difficult to find parking or tables for a picnic. If possible, we recommend visiting during the week.

Lake Antrona is also suitable for swimming, meaning you can dive into its emerald waters to cool off. Typically, after circling the lake, the more adventurous decide to venture as far as the equally picturesque artificial lake of Campliccioli.

The climb is moderately challenging and the path at the end leads to a dam where, if you are lucky, it is not uncommon to spot ibex.

Lake Antrona is the ideal place for a day trip with family or friends, or even just to spend a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of the city. And above all, don't forget your swimsuit: it's hard to resist such cool, clear water!
