Documentary: The construction of the new Mont Blanc cableway
A titanic undertaking, the construction of the Mont Blanc “Skyway” cable car, as told in the Doppelmayr documentary by the company that built it at the Lana (BZ) plant in South Tyrol.
The construction site, which lasted 4 years, put workers and machines to the test at an altitude of 3400 m asl, in areas not reached by roads; everything was brought up with cableways and helicopters. The documentary traces the history of the works in about 20 minutes of video.
The new cable car replaces the previous facility, which covered the stretch in three sections and had been in service for almost 70 years. It connects Courmayeur near Aosta with Punta Helbronner in two partial sections: on a total route of 4,3 kilometers, the plant covers 2.200 meters in height. The stations of the plant provide their own energy needs through a mix of photovoltaic and thermal systems with heat recovery; moreover, the energy recovered during braking is fed into the grid in the form of electrical energy. The specially designed cabins with panoramic glazing, which rotate 360 degrees during the ride, offer a complete view of the peculiar mountain environment at four thousand meters. The internal equipment is very modern and fulfills every wish.
