Arabba in the summer

Arabba

Arabba is a small fraction of Livinallongo del Col di Lana, located in the Venetian Val di Fodom at 1602 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the Sella Group and near the Pordoi Pass and the Campolungo Pass, thanks to which it communicates with the Trentino Alto Adige.

Arabba proves to be a perfect tourist destination in every season: if in winter it is perfect for ski lovers, being part of the "Ski Area The Dolomites Superski ”, in the summer it comes alive with life and colors, with the possibility of practicing outdoor activities or excursions in the luxuriant Valle di Fodom, where there is no lack of historical evidence linked to the Great War.

Certainly Arabba is little touched by mass tourism compared to nearby towns, proving perfect for those who want a relaxing holiday.

What to do and what to see in Arabba

Summer in Arabba will prove to be a real surprise for tourists because they will certainly never get bored, given the amount of activities they can carry out during the summer season, among nature and breathing the clean air that characterizes every place in the Dolomites.

Le excursions are the perfect way to discover the scenic and historical beauties of Arabba and there are routes suitable for everyone, both the most experienced and trained and for families with children: there is even the possibility of participating in tours with tourist guides, who will reveal the secrets of the places that will be discovered, the flora, the fauna, the traditions and also the geological aspects.

Even lovers of two wheels will have the opportunity to give vent to their passion, come on e-bikemountain bike e Road bike: in addition to gentle routes through the typical landscapes of the Dolomites, there are high-altitude off-road routes, complete with adrenaline-fueled descents and gradients.

This is where the Sella Ronda Bike path passes, allowing you to travel along the routes for mountain bikes that connect the 4 passes and the 4 valleys of the Dolomites at the foot of the Sella Group.

A holiday in Arabba invites you to visit the village, starting from Old Mill where in the past rye and barley were ground: the building is a true work of mechanical engineering, albeit made with poor materials such as the sturdy wood with which the gears were made.

Moving to the nearby hamlet of Pieve di Livinallongo there is a bronze statue to which an ancient legend is linked: it represents Katharina Lanz, the girl who at the age of 25 faced, alone and with a simple pitchfork, the Napoleonic troops to defend the ancient Arabba Fodom.

In the square of the same town stands the "Museum of History, Uses, Customs and Traditions of the Ladin People". Its 2000 exhibits, including objects, photos and documents, are distributed in four rooms dedicated to: Ladin society, customs and territory; to work tools and crafts; the fauna, flora and geology of the area; to the Great War that took place on the Col di Lana and to the history of Andraz Castle.

The Castle itself is one of the places to absolutely see during a holiday in Arabba: the fortress, dating back to 1027 and located 17 km from Arabba, at the foot of the Falzarego Pass. It has always had a great strategic importance within the Fodom Valley, controlling the border of the Tyrol and the commercial streets. In the mid-400th century, the scientist and cardinal Cusano retired there, calculating precisely the day of the winter solstice.
Today part of the walls and the original structure can be identified and, from the original entrance, one enters the Museum dedicated to the history of the Castle.

Places of the Great War in Arabba

Organizing a holiday in Arabba also means getting to know the places of the Great War, where the Austro-Hungarian and Italian troops fought. To get the best of it, the soldiers built trenches and tunnels, often using explosives to destroy the enemy positions: through the path 21 / A towards the Col di Lana, you cross the Mount Sief where the crater created by the mines detonated by the Italian troops is still visible.

Many were the dead children of the First World War and many rest today at the Military Memorial of the Pordoi Pass, built more than 2200 meters high. Here is also the "Museum of the Great War Col di Lana Monte di Sangue", complete with objects, uniforms and reconstructions of trenches.
Another shrine is present in Salesèi at the top of Col di Lana, next to a chapel where a mass is celebrated in honor of the fallen on the first Sunday in August.

La Ferrata of the Trenches it is a great way to retrace the places of the Great War, even if only suitable for expert hikers. From the Fedaia Pass (reachable from Porta Vescovo which can be reached from Arabba by cable car), you cross impervious sections, between vertical ropes, suspension bridges and descents with steel cables: you enter the war path between dry stone walls, tunnels and natural platforms where the field kitchens stood.

Starting from Arabba and following the Cordevole torrent, you can reach the pretty one lake of Porta Vescovo: the walk takes about 1 hour and a half, is made up of some panoramic hairpin bends with a view of the Sella Group and is also ideal for families.

A valid alternative, accessible to all, is the path Teriol De Retic leading to the Retiz waterfall: starting from Pieve di Livinallongo, you pass through agglomerations of houses dotted with tabia to then reach the waterfall, which flows between high rocky walls that reveal different geological eras. Passing behind the veil of water, you take a circular route that takes you back to Pieve.

Also spectacular are the excursions to the rocky pinnacles of the Bec de Roces and especially the Viel del Pan, an ancient commercial road used to transport goods to the Val Cordevole: from Arabba it can be reached by cableway Porta Vescovo from which you proceed along path 601, walking on the ridge of the Fedaia Pass, with a constant view of the Marmolada and on the underlying Lago Fedaia.

From the same Passo Fedaia and from the refuge of the same name, you can go up to the 2407 meters of the Padon refuge, and then continue along the CAI path n.680 with the Marmolada and Lake Fedaia always in the background.
