Alpago Cansiglio in summer
Il Cansiglio is a green corner at the south-eastern end of the province of Belluno, located in the sweet Alpago basin, is a succession of meadows and woods that rise towards the rugged and jagged crown of the Carnic Alps, with Nude-Horse group and the peaks of the Dolada, Teverone, Col Nudo, Venal, Messer, Laste and Cavallo mountains which can be traveled on the Alta Via number 7, an alpine hiking route to be covered in stages in a few days.
These mountains are surrounded by hiking trails that also include the famous routes of the Alte Vie di Patera and the Silenzi. Here the environmental heritage is of enormous value. The Cansiglio is the second largest forest in Italy and with its 5000 hectares of immense woods of centuries-old beeches and firs, it hosts a very rich fauna, from the capercaillie to the deer, from the red woodpecker toGolden Eagle, with an exceptional flora represented in the Cansiglio alpine botanical garden. In the Cansiglio plain it is not difficult to see the Roe deer, they can be seen even in broad daylight, they graze together with the cows of the mountain pastures and offer a unique spectacle.
The crown of the Alpago mountains are crossed by numerous paths described in the hiking maps, also using roads that connect 35 hamlets, such as the Alpago Natura itinerary, which runs for 50km on dirt roads and can be covered in stages. There are over 100km of paths frequented by cyclists and cycle hikers that from Lake Santa Croce go up to the Cansiglio forest: paths that have also hosted the European mountain bike championships. A dream alpine environment with natural landscapes and healthy air where you can practice nordic walking, one of the best sports activities to regenerate body and spirit, various ring routes are dedicated to this sport, touching points of naturalistic and historical interest.
The waters of the Santa Croce lake instead they are perfect for the practice of numerous water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, the equipped beach allows you to make boat trips, you can fish, walk or enjoy the warm summer sun on the shore. There is also space for traditional sports such as tennis, horse riding as well as al Golf thanks to the magnificent route of 6000 meters and 18 holes in the Cansiglio plain.
Another feature of no secondary importance is the gastronomic heritage of the Cansiglio, an authentic culinary tradition closely linked to local products. Here we find the Slow Food presidium that promotes the flavors of the territory, especially the excellent malga cheeses and the fresh and smoked ricotta produced in the pastures adjacent to the park's woods. And again honey, honeydew, berries and mushrooms all prepared in tasty dishes following traditional Belluno recipes.
